The Scent Behind Sunset: Citrus, Amber, Lavender & Bergamot

There's a specific light that happens in Los Angeles between 5:30 and 6:30pm that doesn't exist anywhere else. Warm and golden and slightly pink, it catches everything at an angle that makes the ordinary look extraordinary.

Sunset is that light, in fragrance form.

I wanted this one to feel like the end of a good day. Not the end of any day. A good one. The kind where things went better than expected and you're driving home with the window down and the city is doing its thing.

The notes

Citrus is where it starts. Bright and immediate, the kind of citrus that cuts through. It's the opening of a good story: confident and clean.

Lavender is not the lavender you associate with a sleep spray. This is lavender in warm air, the kind that belongs outside rather than on a pillow. It adds softness without making the scent sleepy.

Amber is the warmth. Rich, golden, slightly resinous. It's the note that makes you feel like the sun is still on your skin even after it's gone down.

Bergamot is the sophistication. Earl Grey tea gets its distinctive flavor from bergamot, which tells you something about how it smells: familiar but elevated. Complex. A little unexpected in the best possible way.

When to light it

Sunset is the scent for an evening that earns it. Light it when the day is winding down and the best part is just starting.

It's the scent I think of every time I'm on the 405 at magic hour and LA is doing that thing it does. You know the thing.
